Woodstock Chimes Care & Maintenance
Most Woodstock Chimes are designed for indoor or outdoor enjoyment. To help preserve their appearance and extend their lifespan, we recommend bringing them indoors during extreme weather, heavy winds, or harsh winter conditions. Regular care and proper placement will help keep your chimes looking and sounding their best.
General Care Tips
- Hang your chime in a location where it can move freely without striking walls, railings, or branches.
- Ideal placement is in a covered or protected outdoor area, such as under a porch overhang.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, snow, ice, and strong winds.
- If you live in colder climates, store your chime during winter in a dry, protected space such as a garage or shed.
- Natural aging, fading, and patina are normal with outdoor use and will not affect sound quality.
Restringing Your Woodstock Chime
Watch a video on how to restring your classic style Woodstock Chimes.
Read these written instructions on how to connect the chime to the top ring. (Restringing instructions come with all string and repair kit purchases.)
If your Windsinger Chime needs a new center string, download instructions here.
The string life depends on the amount of UV exposure and the strength of the winds where your chime is hanging. Under normal conditions, the string should last 7–8 years.
Aluminum Tubes, Plastic, Stone & Glass Parts
Woodstock Chimes tubes are made of aluminum, which will not rust. Over time, outdoor exposure may cause natural oxidation or pitting, which does not affect the sound.
- Clean with a soft damp cloth and mild soap if needed.
- Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.
Wood Parts
Wood components are finished with an eco-friendly, water-based coating and require periodic care to maintain their appearance.
- Apply a light coat of wood wax or exterior oil (such as teak, Danish, or lemon oil) as needed.
- We recommend Wood Butter, available from The Bearded Chef at tbchef.com — use promo code WOODSTOCK20 for 20% off your first order.
- Reapply seasonally to help protect against drying and weathering.
- For added protection, a thin coat of exterior varnish may be applied annually.
Resin & Rust-Finish Elements
- Wipe clean with a duster or damp cloth.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners to preserve the finish.
Copper & Brass Parts
Copper and brass may naturally develop a patina over time, which enhances their character.
- Clean with a cleaner designed for copper or brass if a polished look is preferred.
- Or allow to age naturally for a classic finish.
Crystal Suncatchers & Accents
- Gently rinse crystals in water and allow them to air dry.
- Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
Bamboo Chimes
Crafted from natural bamboo and coconut shell, each chime is hand-made and hand-tuned by artisans in Bali. With proper care, bamboo chimes typically last 3–4 years when used outdoors.
We take great care in crafting our Asli Arts bamboo chimes to ensure exceptional quality. Each chime is made by dedicated artisans who produce exclusively for us, allowing for consistent quality standards. The bamboo is carefully harvested at the optimal time of year and properly dried before production to help minimize cracking.
To extend their life:
- Hang in a protected area, away from direct sun and strong wind.
- Bring indoors during storms or extreme weather.
- Wipe occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dirt or buildup.
- Apply a protective coat of varnish annually for added durability.
