Chimes of Partch®

$85.99

The Chimes of Partch are lively, uplifting and energetic.

This cheerful sounding wind chime is tuned to an uplifting pentatonic scale and named after American composer Harry Partch (1901-1974), who taught us that science and magic can harmonize in music. Probably in part because he grew up with Mandarin, Spanish and Native American songs, Partch felt restricted by the modern scale of western music. He forged a new style of music using principles of pure tuning, thereby expanding the musical possibilities. Partch wrote much of his music for sculptural instruments that he built himself. He was, in his own words, "a philosophic music-man seduced into carpentry." The scale of Chimes of Partch is common in the music of many ancient civilizations and is still heard throughout the world today.

The wind chime was a gift

Bought this one to compliment the Taj Mahal wind chime I gave her for her birthday. She has that one hanging outside in a tree and one of her horses enjoys bumping the tree to get the chimes to play and stands there listening to the music. She loves the sounds this new wind chime creates. Said it is beautiful. She cannot wait to see how her horse reacts the two wind chimes together.

Replacement for 40 year old chimes that lived a windy life

We have several Woodstock chimes, but my first set—Chimes of Partch—were always my favorite. So I was sad when the strings started breaking. I first ordered the string, but couldn’t detach the broken string from the old wood parts, so that meant I needed new wood too. Woodstock does offer a one time discount on a new set of chimes, but the postage to mail the damaged chimes from Alaska did not make up for the discount. So I waited for a sale and bought a new pair. They shipped quickly and arrived safely. They sound just like the old chimes and seem as expertly crafted too. When my husband hung them up, I said “now all is right with the world.”

    Just the right tone

Love that the description also offers suggestions for compatible chime sounds. This pairs perfectly with my Chimes of Java so I'm happy that I now have stereo in my garden.

A lifetime of enjoyment, so far...

My wife and I heard these chimes 30 years ago shopping in Williams-Sonoma. I *really* liked their sound, and so did my wife, but when we later compared which chimes we liked, she said she liked the Chimes of Partch and I said I liked another one. So we didn't buy them, and I got the chance to buy them secretly for her for Christmas. She was amazed that I could lie so smoothly and easily to her, but it was for a good cause. I hung them up on our front porch. We have owned them for over 30 years, I've re-strung them once, and am looking to get repair parts to overhaul them again. We still love the sound, unchanged in 3 decades. They have survived windstorms and New England winters, rain, hail, whatever Mother Nature throws at them. Amazing. Wonderful. Good job, Woodstock Chimes.

Such a nice story about your Chimes of Partch - thank you for sharing it with us. Just in case you don't know, we sell repair parts on our website (go to www.chimes.com/Parts or click on 'Replacement Parts' at the bottom of the page). I hope this helps!
